Pig farmers in India’s northeast oppose reopening of borders

July 31, 2020

The North East Progressive Pig Farmers’ Association has opposed moves by India’s Central government to allow the transport of pigs from the states of Haryana and Punjab to the northeast. The Association together with state governments in the northeast have written to the Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries to reconsider the move. An outbreak of ASF in the northeastern states resulted in the ban on inter district transport of pigs. Northeastern farmers fear that reopening borders will worsen the ASF spread in the area.
