by Isa Q Tan – Live pig prices in the Philippines decreased slightly due to low demand, as well as new ASF outbreaks in Calabarzon, south of Metro Manila. An industry stakeholder told Asian Agribiz that the price drop is temporary, as farmers in the ASF-hit areas are selling their stocks. Once those are gone, however, he said live price will surge. Meanwhile, Zoilo Lapus, President of the Philippine College of Swine Practitioners told Asian Agribiz that demand for pork has slipped, as consumers’ purchasing power has decreased. Dr Lapus noted that the low demand is temporary, since Filipinos continue to prefer pork over other meats.
