Tata introduces new food safety packaging tech in India

July 27, 2020

Tata SmartFoodz, India is bringing in new technology to raise the quality, safety and shelf life of prepackaged food. They are in partnership with US-based 915 Labs (associated with Washington State University). Tata is working with two types of technologies; “microwave assisted thermal sterilization, or MATS, and microwave assisted pasteurization systems, or MAPS. Both use a combination of microwave heat and a hot water tunnel to rapidly heat packaged food to sterilization or pasteurization temperatures, and hold it there for a minimum amount of time before cooling it down.” MATS produces shelf-stable meals, while MAPS produces chilled meals.
