H5N1 avian flu kills 68000 layer chickens in Merauke

The Livestock and Animal Health Services Agency in Merauke in Papua, Indonesia has reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza that killed 68,000 commercial layer chickens as of June. The virus also killed ducks and native chickens. The outbreak began in December last year and most chickens were killed in March. “The report has been sent to the central government. We are waiting for assistance on vaccination and other treatments,” said Marthinus, Acting Head of the Agency.
