Pandemic highlights potential for alternative protein

The challenges faced by animal protein producers has highlighted the potential for meat alternatives. Covid-19 underscored the fact that the long production cycles and centralized processing facilities for meat and meat-based products are vulnerable to supply chain shocks. In its report titled ‘Covid-19’s impact of animal protein in Asia’, the United Overseas Bank in Singapore said the “alternative protein industry, which uses cellular protein, plant-based protein, and other food technology, is not subject to the same supply chain constraints,” and could serve as an optional food source.
