Thailand to curb corn imports from Myanmar

June 12, 2020

Thailand’s corn imports from Myanmar from February to March jumped 20% to 690,000 tonnes as the duty-free period took effect. “The import could reach 1.6 mt throughout the period of the tax exemption under the Asean FTA from February to August,” said Pornthep Pooprasert , President of The Crops Growers and Merchandise Association. With the influx of imports, the association wants the government to shorten the tax-free period and raise tariffs on crops that could substitute corn by 12-19% outside the harvesting season and 19-27% during the harvesting season.
