Singapore sees surge in canned food imports

June 10, 2020

Data from the Singapore Food Agency shows an increase in canned food imports during its lockdown phase. About 4700 tons of canned seafood were imported between April – May 28, double the 2000 tons imported over the same period last year.  Also, 2600 tons of canned meat were imported during the same period, double the 1,300 in 2019. Professor William Chen of Nanyang Technological University said this was expected as canned food has longer shelf life. This could also build up the national food stockpile he said.
