Border closure with Vietnam disrupts Cambodia’s agribusiness

March 26, 2020

On March 18, Cambodia temporarily suspended operations of border gates with Vietnam. This border closure is expected to affect the livelihood of farmers in both countries. According to Heng Try, President of Kampong Thom’s Srok Sondan Cassava Association, 60% of cassava harvested in his district is sold to Vietnam. The closure will cause a backlog in Cambodia’s cassava exports to Vietnam and drive prices down. On the other hand, export items from Vietnam such as fish and meat will see higher prices.
