Shiok Meats CEO Sandhya Sriram said the cost of production for cell-based shrimp meat might be cut in half by end 2020. This means, shrimp meat based food such as “siu mai” will be retail-bound in 2021. A kilo of lab-grown shrimp meat now costs USD 3700 and single Shiok meat siu mai dumpling costs USD 220. Ms Sriram hopes to cut the cost to USD 36/kg by signing a new low-cost deal for nutrients to grow the meat cells and expects it will fall further as the company achieves scale.
