Hong Kong seizes smuggled meat bound for China

December 3, 2019

Customs in Hong Kong has seized USD 6.39 million worth of smuggled frozen meat bound for mainland China. A cross-border syndicate is responsible for the 540 tons of unrefrigerated meat which bypassed health and safety checks. The street value of the consignment is said to be around USD 12.8 million and contained beef and offal heading to Guangdong. The gang is said to be taking advantage of the US-China trade war and had previously successfully smuggled unmanifested goods from the US, Canada and South American countries.
