Japan to vaccinate against classical swine fever

October 18, 2019

Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishery (MAFF) is set to begin vaccination of healthy pigs against classical swine fever (CSF) in 10 affected prefectures. The country has culled over  140,000 pigs in the past year due to CSF, also known as hog cholera. Once vaccination starts, these areas will be banned from shipping live animals and fertilized eggs to unvaccinated areas because it is difficult to distinguish vaccinated pigs from infected animals. Shipments of processed meat products will be unaffected.
