Fresh water fisheries development in Sri Lanka

September 12, 2019

The Sri Lankan Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is to focus on developing fresh water fisheries. This will meet increasing demand for seafood in local and export markets. At a workshop held to introduce SPF Monodon and SPF Vannamei shrimp species to farmers in the North Western Province it was stated that new laws would be introduced and steps taken to ban the fragmenting of large scale prawn farms for other purposes. The minimum land allowed for farms would be four acres. In 2018, 8100 tonnes of shrimp was harvested, the highest on record.
