Nearly 5m pigs lost to ASF

August 14, 2019

A year after it was first reported in China, ASF continues to sweep through Asia. To date it has claimed almost 5 million pigs in the region, resulting in severe economic losses to the pig sector, said the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Chief Veterinary Officer Juan Lubroth has urged at-risk countries to implement strong border controls and biosecurity to keep the virus out. He added that “it may take badly-affected countries years to recover from the socio-economic effects” of the disease.
