Singapore large costs in food wastage

An estimated USD 1.8 billion is lost every year in Singapore when 342,000 tonnes of food is wasted even before it reaches retail and consumers. According to a joint study by the Singapore Environment Council and Deloitte, this loss occurs along the upstream and midstream segments of the fresh food supply chain, from the production stage, to transport, processing, storage and distribution. Vegetables and fruits account for half of it while key factors include poor disease and pest management, over importation of food items, fragmented cold chain management, and inadequate infrastructure
