China gears to support sow farms

June 12, 2019

China has urged provincial authorities to offer financial support to sow farms and large-scale pig farms to help stabilize pork production after ASF caused declines in hog herds. This will include credit guarantees for farms with 5000 hogs per year, guarantees on expiring loans/extensions and capped interest rates at 2%. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said China’s breeding herd fell by 22% in April from a year ago, the largest drop ever, and is worried about a shortage of pork in the world’s top producer and consumer of the meat.
