ASF pulls down Vietnam’s pig production

May 17, 2019

Vietnam’s pig industry is poised to suffer its third consecutive year of decline as African Swine Fever (ASF) is expected to result in at least a 10% drop in pig production this year, Rabobank said in its latest Pork Quarterly Q2 2019 report. While the government is working to contain ASF, new outbreaks have been reported. The bank said the drop in production will result in a 7% decline in per capita consumption. To compensate for the expected pork shortage, Vietnam’s imports are expected to go up this year. Rabobank also noted a 123% year-on-year hike in chicken imports, and expects levels to remain high in 2019.
