The European Union (EU) has revoked the yellow flag imposed on Thailand over illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) concerns. The decision represents the first step to unlock the complete ban on Thai marine fisheries product into the EU. EU fisheries commissioner Karmenu Vella says after meeting with Thai Deputy Prime Minister Chatchai Sarikulya that he is “excited that we have a new committed partner in this fight”. In April 2015, Thailand, regarded as the world’s third largest seafood exporter, was issued the yellow card – a warning that the country’s intention to tackle illegal overfishing and human trafficking during that time was not sufficient. The EU and Thailand have engaged in a constructive process of cooperation and dialogue, said Mr Vella.
