Livestock and poultry sectors remain the Philippines’ bright prospects

January 12, 2018

Strengthening the Philippine livestock and poultry industries will be a big help to smallholder farmers as well as to small-and-medium scale enterprises. In a report by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), the livestock and poultry sectors present “a glimmer of light in local agriculture that is projected to continuously grow in the next decade”.  The report also noted the consistent growth of the livestock and poultry industry which has been contributing positively to the economy even with less support from the government compared to other agricultural commodities. The PIDS also noted that from 1998 to 2016, the production value of the combined livestock and poultry industries grew from USD3.26 billion to USD5.19 billion, with hog and chicken as the biggest contributors.
